The Science of Premonitions

A recent article discusses the work of  Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) researchers Dean Radin and psychologist Daryl Berns in their quest to uncover the “science of premonitions”. Both researchers explore the probability of intuition with measured scientific experiments.

In his laboratory in Northern California, Radin has  participants sit quietly in an electromagnetically shielded room and measures their physiology. Using electrodes on their hands to study their autonomic nervous system, he measures how they respond to emotional and clam pictures presented in random sequence. Between pictures the screen is momentarily blank. As expected, participant’s physiology showed that they responded with more arousal when viewing the emotional pictures rather than the calm ones.  What was interesting to the researchers was that the physiology of the participants seemed to anticipate emotional stimuli before viewing the emotional pictures.

Meanwhile, a  article  recently published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology by Cornell University psychologist, Daryl Bern, offers the results of nine precognition experiments involving more than 1,000 participants. Bern explores “time-reversing”, in which the cause-and-effect sequence in standard psychological experiments is reversed.. Bern reports significant evidence in eight of the nine experiments support evidence for precognition.

For those of us who believe that precognition is viable, such research is a welcome support.  Others, however, continue to be skeptical.  The question is posed by Marilyn Schlitz, president of  IONS; do we dismiss the results of these experiments out of hand, simply because they challenge the dominant paradigm?  It’s a good question to ask. Ultimately, I believe, we can rely on our own experience, but it is always comforting to know that respected scientists continue to push the envelop to answer this question definitively.
